This Unfashionable Reason Is Why You Want A Widespread Bathroom Faucet
Widespread bathroom sink faucets (also sometimes written as "wide spread") offer a very clean look, with the handles and spout rising up out of the countertop separately instead of from a visible common base. They are stylish, but one of the best reasons to have these in your bathroom has nothing to do with style. You want a widespread faucet for the very unfashionable reason known as ease of cleaning. The way these faucets are configured makes maintenance so much easier, and that in turn makes the faucets look a lot better.
They Are So Much Easier to Clean
These fixtures rise out of the countertop separately, which means you can clean around the smaller bases more thoroughly than you could the wider base of a center-set faucet. That means you have less of that whitish, yellowish scale building up in the back, making the rear portion of the faucet a lot less gross to clean.
A center-set faucet – the classic type with the handles and spout rising up from a common central base – usually blocks your view of that back portion. Many times the back sides of these center-set faucets are also very close to the wall, making cleaning even harder. The result is an area you can't quite get to, which allows more scale to build up. And while the scale won't really damage the countertop, it can be disgusting to look at, and its tendency to remain wet (from water dripping from your hand when you turn off the faucet or from splashing water) can make it a source of moisture for pests.
Widespread faucets, however, give you so much more room to maneuver even if the faucet assembly itself is still close to the wall. The result is a much cleaner sink top.
No Base Means No Spots
Also, no central base means no spots to deal with. Most center-set faucets have a metal finish that shows limescale spots very easily – and they become hard to reach and remove when they're in a spot wedged between a handle and the spout. Widespread faucets don't have these bases, and all you have to do is wipe up the countertop in between each piece.
The ease with which you can clean something seems like such a mundane thing, but when you realize you'll have these faucets for years, the ease of cleaning suddenly becomes a very big issue. Widespread faucets are much easier to clean, making them a top choice for homeowners who want to upgrade their bathroom sinks.
